changing shape of the aircraft industry in Britain, from the pioneers of
1908, through two world wars, and rationalization in the 1960’s, up to the
formation of British Aerospace/BAe Systems. |

Aircraft – the Heinkel He 176
Douglas Downer-Smith’
speciality is the study of the jet and rocket aircraft of World War II and
tonight he gave us the story of the Heinkel He 176 and what brought about
its emergence in 1939, just before world’s first turbojet flight of the He
178. An excellent lecture on a very rare subject. |

The Worlds
Largest Single Engine Biplane
Bill Leary,
Chief Pilot of the An-2 Club, who operate HA-MKF based at Popham,
gave us a very entertaining and detailed lecture about spending “£500 per hour on a 9 Cylinder, Gas Guzzling, Oil
Drinking, Hissing Bi-plane” and still be able to fly it on a PPL. A great
lecture, on a great machine and given by a great character - Thank You Bill
for a superb lecture.

Heroes All – Airmen’s Stories In
Their Own Words
The result of over 20 years of interviewing wartime veterans,
Steve Bond presented a very personal view of the World War II air war from
all sides of the conflict, with lots of pictures, anecdotes and sound bites,
a fabulous lecture and attended by a record audience.
His book "Hero's All - Airmen of different nationalities

Flying for Life
Mission Aviation Fellowship is a charity but it is
also an airline, which operates 130+ aircraft in 38 countries worldwide.
Founded in 1945, Mike Fawdrey gave us a unique insight into its operations
around the world, supporting various mission agencies in remote places
where there are no roads. A wonderful lecture on a little known but vital
service. |

Cold War
Aircrew Forum 2010
The 4th MKAS Air Crew Forum, the theme
this time was the Cold War.
As per the previous formats, Air Vice
Marshal Peter Dye OBE RAF Museum Director General chaired the
assembled panel of guests, who have unique experience of activity at the
height of the Cold War, from an operational and historical perspective.

Air
Atlantique - the Past, the Present and the Future.
Steve Bridgewater,
Commercial Manager of Air Atlantique Classic Flight gave
us a superb lecture, telling us the full story, not just of Air Atlantique,
but the individual aircraft, and the superb new
AIRBASE opening on May 29th,
as well the DC-6 "Taxi Back to the Fifties" and the newest arrival Hawker
Siddeley Nimrod MR.2 XV232 which had arrived at Coventry just that very
afternoon. Many Thanks Steve and we look forward to our
MKAS visit and flights.

UK's Regional Airports - their many operators and how they changed over the
same period - how the airports started, how they developed and how they

Air Raiding On The UK
During The Great War
David Warren is a
professional battlefield tour guide and has spent many years researching the
German airship and aeroplane bombing raids on the UK.
He had everyone mesmerised by his accounts of the early air raids on the UK
and we thank him for a superb lecture.

Flying the Hunter in RAF Service
Peter Sawyer pays MKAS a return visit with an illustrated talk about his time
flying Hunters with 208 Squadron in Kenya and the Gulf.
This lecture was
cancelled due to the bad weather, but it has now been re-scheduled for
11th January 2011. |
