Cold War Aircrew Forum 2010

The 4th MKAS Air Crew Forum, the theme this time will be the Cold War.  As per the previous formats, Air Vice Marshal Peter Dye, Curatorial Director of the RAF Museum, will chair the assembled panel of guests, who have unique experience of activity at the height of the Cold War, from an operational and historical perspective.

Bill Leary, Chief Pilot of the An-2 Club, who operate HA-MKF based at Popham, tells us all about spending “£500 per hour on a 9 Cylinder, Gas Guzzling, Oil Drinking, Hissing Bi -plane” and still be able to fly it on a PPL.

Douglas Downer-Smith’ speciality is the study of the jet and rocket aircraft of World War II and tonight he tells us the story of the Heinkel He 176 and what brought about its emergence in 1939, just before world’s first turbojet flight of the He 178.

The Evolution of the British Aircraft Industry

Dr Ron Smith (author of the excellent British Built Aircraft Series) takes us through the changing shape of the aircraft industry in Britain, from the pioneers of 1908, through two world wars, and rationalization in the 1960’s, up to the formation of British Aerospace/BAe Systems.
