MKAS - A Brief History

The Society was the brain child of our first Chairman Steve Bond. Towards the end of 1999, Steve decided to do something about the lack of facilities for the aviation minded people in the Milton Keynes area, reasoning that in a city of this size there should be a significant number of people eager to support such a venture.

Through the good offices of Air Britain, many fellow enthusiasts were located and an inaugural meeting was held in March 2000, during which the shape of the proposed society was thrashed out. From the outset, the aim was to build a professionally-run society catering for the needs of aviation buffs with a highly varied set of interests. Some 15 people attended that first meeting held, followed by our first guest speaker just four weeks after that. This rapid setting-up has since been matched by a steady increase in membership as the word has spread.

In parallel with the monthly Lecture programme, it was recognised from the outset that a monthly newsletter was needed to keep in touch with those members who might not be able to attend the meetings for whatever reason, and this was launched at the inaugural gathering.
We were also determined to offer something different from the more traditional enthusiasts societies, and the first manifestation of that came only three months into our existence, with a flying evening at nearby Turweston, with several members experiencing the delights of hands-on flying in a variety of light aircraft.

The Milton Keynes Aviation Society continues to go from strength to strength, and as we grow so does our reputation in the aviation industry, as can be seen from the very high calibre of guest speakers we continue to attract.

That was just the beginning.......                    ....See MKAS To-day
